After Urban Meyer chose not to reveal his starting quarterback, Cardale Jones took the first snaps under center for Ohio State

There weren’t many questions about who the preseason No. 1 team in college football was going to be this offseason. After winning the National Championship in the inaugural College Football Playoff, the Ohio State Buckeyes were going to come into the 2015 season as the top dog and the heavy favorites. The only question was who would be starting at quarterback for the Buckeyes.

Head coach Urban Meyer chose not to announce his decision until kickoff of their season opener against the Virginia Tech Hokies, but we knew it would come down to J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones. When the Buckeyes came out for their opener in Lane Stadium, it was Jones who was the starting quarterback.

Jones, who led OSU through the Big Ten Championship game and the College Football Playoff to the national title, started only those three games for the Buckeyes last season. Meanwhile, Barrett started every regular season game to that point before suffering a season-ending injury in the season finale.

In the end, Meyer’s decision was between two of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country who both happen to play football in Columbus. It’s like choosing between winning $1 million and $999,999. In the end, there isn’t much of a difference and you’re more than fine having either.

Meyer’s decision turned out to look quite smart, too. Jones led the Buckeyes down the field and threw a beautiful touchdown pass on their first offensive drive.
