Keys to Victory
Taking the keys from Bryce Petty as the quarterback in the Bears’ offense, Seth Russell looked every bit up for the job of leading one of the most potent attacks in college football. Against a Lamar defense that has yet to remotely be tested this season, Russell is going to need to continue to show his prowess at the position, dropping dimes with his big arm to high-talent targets like Corey Coleman and KD Cannon. The Bears defense has more to prove, though. After letting SMU get much closer than they would have cared for last week, the Bears should be looking to prove that they can dominate opponents on that side of the ball and not have to get into shootouts against upper-tier opponents.
Lamar is still an unknown quantity at this point after taking on Bacone College in week one. Minden looked good at quarterback and a slew of running backs looked solid against a much lesser opponent on the ground. Against a high-caliber team like Baylor, though, the experience of senior Minden and of players like last year’s leading wide receiver Reggie Begelton are going to be huge. The Cardinals have to play mistake-free football and capitalize on any mistakes that the Bears may make throughout the game.
Betting Odds
Point Spread: Baylor -58.5
O/U: 81.5
Prediction
Though we don’t know much about Lamar this season after their weak first opponent, it’s pretty clear where all of the top-tier talent in this matchup lies. The Bears offense should be able to defend home field with relative ease and put up a lot of points in doing so.
Final Score: Lamar Cardinals: 3, Baylor Bears: 77
