Notre Dame was on the verge of being upset until a miracle happened with less than a minute to go.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish looked as if they were going to be upset. They were trailing at the half, but had built a 26-14 lead over the Virginia Cavaliers before star quarterback Malik Zaire went down with a brutal leg injury. After that, the Cavaliers clawed back and took a 27-26 lead late in the fourth quarter. It seemed that, with an inexperienced backup quarterback in DeShone Kizer playing, the Fighting Irish were due to be upset.
Kizer and Will Fuller had other plans in mind.
With less than a minute left in the game, Kizer took the snap at the Virginia 39-yard line on second down. Fuller was streaking towards the end zone when the quarterback let it fly. It landed right in the arms of Fuller as he trotted in for the touchdown.
Luck of the Irish! Backup QB Kizer to Will Fuller for @NDFootball lead with :12 left! #NDvsUVA https://t.co/o7KVJsj4kl

After converting the two-point conversion, the Fighting Irish went up 34-27 with just 12 seconds left. That wasn’t enough time for UVA to make anything to happen, giving the Irish the win and moving them to 2-0 on the season.
There’s getting a win, and there’s doing it in ridiculously dramatic fashion. Fuller’s catch certainly qualifies as the latter.
