Clemson vs Louisville, 20-17: Full highlights, final score and more
By Jack Crosby
Clemson had a small scare on Thursday night, but they were able to escape the upset bid by Louisville
Thursday night we nearly had yet another upset early here in the college football season, but in the end, the Clemson Tigers were having none of that. When it was all said and done on Thursday night inside Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, the No. 11 team in the nation came away with the 20-17 win.
One thing to take away from this entire game is that it was, in one word, sloppy. This was not the game we expected, especially from Clemson, who many people have such high hopes for. However, Louisville on a Thursday night is generally a tough place to play, so you really can’t take too much away from them.
Clemson took a 7-3 lead into the half, and would get the lead to as much as 20-10 in the fourth quarter. With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, that’s where things got really scary when Louisville’s Traveon Samuel returned a kickoff 100 yards to the house. The upset was in the air, but a late missed field goal by the Cardinals was able to help seal the deal for Dabo Swinney, DeShaun Watson (who did not have his best night) and the Tigers. Louisville would get one more chance with time running out, but the Hail Mary attempt was unsuccessful.
Watson finished this one with 199 yards passing and two interceptions, so it’ll be interesting to see how he’s viewed in the Heisman conversation now.
Three Stars
Wayne Gallman (RB, Clemson) – 24 rushes for 139 yards
Traveon Samuel (KR, Louisville) – 100-yard kickoff return to cut the score to 20-17
Jaylen Smith (WR, Louisville) – Three catches for 77 yards
Highlights
Odds
Coming into this one on Thursday night, Clemson was a 6-point favorite, so Louisville was able to cover their end, only losing by three.
Next Week
After moving to 3-0, Clemson will now get a week off before they have to face off against Notre Dame on Oct. 3. Meanwhile Louisville, who’s now 0-3 to start the year, will look for their first victory of the season when they take on Samford next Saturday. The misery should be over soon, Cardinals fans.
