Jamaal Charles says he caused the Kansas City Chiefs the loss on Thursday night agasint the Denver Broncos.
The Kansas City Chiefs were in the driver’s seat of the game against the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football and looked headed to a win. Then Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning led a late charge downfield to tie the game.
With roughly 30 seconds left in the game, the Chiefs could kneel and wait for over time or try to win the game. They elected to go with the presumably safe play of running the ball to veteran back Jamaal Charles.
Charles is a sure-handed back and if he happened to break loose and put the Chiefs in a position to win, they’d accept it.
Instead, he fumbled it after Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall knocked the ball loose. The Broncos scooped it up and ran it into the endzone for the game-winning touchdowns.
“It’s one of the hardest feelings right now that I’ve felt in a long time,” Charles said following the loss, via ESPN.com. “I caused us the loss today. I tried to put the team on my back, and I ended up losing the game. It’s all on me tonight.”
Charles is certainly to blame on what might be the most pivotal play of the game, and he had fumbled earlier in the game as well, but Kansas City had five turnovers overall.
Turning over the ball that often in an NFL game spells doom for any team no matter how talented.
Some fans are blaming Andy Reid instead of Charles, saying the Chiefs should have kneeled to run out the clock and await overtime.
