South Carolina Gamecocks vs. No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs

The South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1) head to Athens, Ga. this weekend for a showdown with the Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) on Saturday at Sanford Stadium. The Gamecocks are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Kentucky Wildcats, with former walk-on Perry Orth slated to make his first start at quarterback. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will attempt to extend their undefeated record, as sophomore running back Nick Chubb continues to make his case as an early season Heisman Trophy candidate.

Keys to Victory

South Carolina:

South Carolina will need to lean heavily on the running game if they are going to keep this game close. Perry Orth will be making the first start of his collegiate career, and he did not exactly set the world on fire during his appearance last weekend against the Kentucky Wildcats. The Georgia defense is much more talented than Kentucky’s, and could cause Orth an abundance of trouble if the Gamecocks’ rushing attack falls silent.

On defense, South Carolina will need to find a way to slow down Nick Chubb, a task that seems near impossible for a defense that struggled to stop the run against the likes of North Carolina and Kentucky the past two weeks.

Georgia:

Georgia should be able to control this game from the opening kickoff, but if they begin to commit turnovers, things could get interesting. The responsibility will fall on graduate transfer quarterback Greyson Lambert to protect the football. Sophomore Nick Chubb has continued to establish himself as one of the premier running backs in college football, and should have no problem delivering another dominant performance against the Gamecocks.

The Bulldogs’ elite talent on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at linebacker, should be enough to hold South Carolina under 20 points. If this is the case on Saturday, Georgia will cruise to a victory with ease.

Prediction

When a Steve Spurrier coached team lines up against the Georgia Bulldogs, you can never count them out. The Ol’ Ball Coach has led the Gamecocks to victory in four of the past five meetings between the two teams, including last season when South Carolina handed Georgia a defeat that ended up costing the Bulldogs a trip to the SEC Championship Game.

This is not the same Gamecocks team that took the field last season, though.

They have several major question marks surrounding their roster, with the largest uncertainty being at the quarterback position due to a recent injury to Connor Mitch. Expect the Georgia defense to rattle Percy Orth, as Nick Chubb runs wild for another 100-yard performance. The Bulldogs win in a landslide.

Final Score: Georgia 31, South Carolina 13
