No. 23 Northwestern Wildcats vs. Duke Blue Devils
If you’re looking for one of the most underrated, yet academically-gifted, matchups for week three, look no further than No. 23 Northwestern’s showdown with Duke. The Wildcats are the surprise Big Ten team of the season thus far after they took down a ranked Stanford team at home in week one.
Not many people saw Northwestern having this kind of success early on, but the Wildcats, led by fiery head coach Pat Fitzgerald, have put themselves back on the map after a couple of impressive victories to start the year.
Starting a new quarterback, Clayton Thorson, hasn’t paid off just yet, but when he grows more comfortable, he will be a force. The run game led by Justin Jackson is the real cog in the offensive machine. Jackson leads all rushers with 212 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Duke’s offense, on the other hand, is on fire to start the season. It will have to deal with quite possibly the stingiest defense in Pat Fitzgerald’s tenure, but having home-field advantage in this one will help.
Junior, and first-year starter, Thomas Sirk has led both the pass and run games for the Blue Devils. He’s one of the main reasons why this team has outscored opponents 92-7 through two weeks. Sirk has passed for 604 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 154 yards and a score.
The young quarterback already has four receivers who have recorded over 100 receiving yards and is turning into a star in Durham. Just like Northwestern, Duke’s defense is one of the best in the country and it’s stinginess is more related to its run-stopping ability.
It might be a long day for Justin Jackson on the road.
