In a game where no one gave the Stanford Cardinal much of a shot to win, the Cardinal came out on top of rival No. 6 USC in a big upset.

On a day in which it looked like a safe bet to pick the USC Trojans to roll over the unpredictable Stanford Cardinal, the trees fought back and won on the road, 41-31, on Saturday evening.

Kevin Hogan went back to his winning ways with a huge upset while the Cody Kessler-JuJu Smith-Schuster connection remains as solid as ever, despite a loss.

These two teams will be fighting all season long for a spot in the Pac-12 title game where we could potentially see a rematch.

Three stars

Kevin Hogan was an absolute monster in this one as he stepped up and silenced his critics, completing 18-of-23 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

You can’t knock the play of Cody Kessler and JuJu Smith-Schuster as they share this spot, in my eyes, as the senior QB passed for 272 yards and three touchdowns while Smith-Schuster had eight catches for 153 yards and a score.

Christian McCaffrey had a solid game on the ground, rushing for 115 yards, but he must share this spot as the third star with Remound Wright who had three touchdown runs.

Odds

Stanford marched into Southern California and beat the spread after being 10 point underdogs. If you picked Stanford to win this one, you’re looking really good.

Next week

The Trojans will need to rebound next week against Arizona State, but the Sun Devils are a tough team to beat on the road. The matchup between Mike Bercovici and Cody Kessler will be one to watch for as the Pac-12 South title will likely go down to at least these two teams.

Stanford will look to continue the hot streak next week by traveling to Oregon State will hopes to assert its dominance once again in Pac-12 play and improve to 2-0 in conference play. It’s been an up and down season for Stanford, but a conference title is not out of the question.
