Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Texas Longhorns

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will travel south to Royal Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon to take on the struggling Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns have looked much improved as of late with quarterback Jerrod Heard showing off his ability as a dual threat taking snaps for Texas, but their defense remains problematic after a 1-2 start. Meanwhile, Mike Gundy’s Cowboys have beat up on a weak non-conference schedule behind a stout defense and consistent play from quarterback Mason Rudolph and running back Chris Carson.

Keys to Victory

For Texas at home, they are going to need Heard to continue to look dynamic at the quarterback position. In his first start last week in the Longhorns’ loss to the California Golden Bears, the freshman threw for 364 yards and just one interception while rushing for 163 yards and three scores. That goes along with his 120 yards passing and 96 yards rushing in backup duty the week before. Heard is going to have to deliver that same type of performance against a defense that has only allowed 35 combined points over their first three games of the season.

Stopping Heard will be the biggest key for the Cowboys in this game as they look to pick up a big road win in the Big 12. We all know by now that the Longhorns can’t stop anyone and Oklahoma State shouldn’t be the exception to that with the efficiency that Rudolph has shown to this point. That makes stopping Heard at least on occasion all the more important for the Cowboys. Their offense is going to be able to almost score at will, so if they can slow down Heard and even just sometimes cause him trouble, Gundy’s boys will have the advantage in this one.

Betting Odds

Point Spread: Oklahoma State Cowboys -3
Moneyline: Oklahoma State Cowboys -150, Texas Longhorns +130
O/U: 59

Prediction

59 seems like way too low of an over/under when the Texas defense is going to be on the field. The Cowboys should be able to score at will on the Longhorns in this one and I have more faith in their defense to give the young quarterback in Heard some trouble in this contest. Ultimately, that gives Oklahoma State the edge come Saturday.

Final Score: Oklahoma State Cowboys: 52, Texas Longhorns: 31
