Keys to Victory

Stanford Cardinal

Obviously, we saw last week what really makes this Stanford team so dangerous, and that’s the play of quarterback Kevin Hogan. While he did not look good in their Week One loss to Northwestern that no one could forget, he looked like a completely different signal caller on Saturday as the Cardinal upset the Trojans. He was efficient with his passes and he limited the mistakes as well. If that Kevin Hogan shows up weekly, then that’s when we see the good Stanford.

Oregon State Beavers

Defensively, they cannot let Christian McCaffrey run wild. Part of the reason that Hogan was so effective last weekend was because the run game was opening things up for him and the passing game. In that 41-31 win inside the Coliseum. McCaffrey torched the Trojans’ defense to the tune of 115 yards on 26 carries. If the Oregon State defense wants to force Hogan into some mistakes, then they need to cut the head off of the running game first and foremost by stopping McCaffrey. This was something USC couldn’t do and they paid the price for it.

Point Spread: Stanford -15.5

Prediction

While it’s nice to imagine that Oregon State may be able to hold that Stanford running game in check, the fact of the matter is they won’t. This is the same Oregon State defense that gave up 35 points to Michigan, who doesn’t really have all that efficient of an offense. In classic Stanford fashion, they’ll do exactly what they did last week, which is control the game on the ground and open things up for Hogan to make some easy plays.

However, to give some credit to Oregon State, Corvallis is not the easiest place to play, so it won’t be a blowout.

Final Score: Stanford 27, Oregon State 17
