Rice Owls vs. No. 5 Baylor Bears

With one of most potent offensive attacks in the country, Baylor has proven that life without Bryce Petty isn’t as difficult as it had once seemed. Through two games, the Bears are averaging 758 total yards of offense while blowing out two inferior opponents before a bye in week three.

Seth Russell might be a Heisman candidate, but the junior from Garland, Texas, has an average completion rate and he just threw three interceptions against FCS foe Lamar. With four interceptions through two games, his 718 yards and nine touchdowns are almost tainted.

Corey Coleman is doing his best to make sure the quarterback has a solid year, though. He has caught 22 passes for 360 yards and five scores while the next closest receiver, Jay Lee, has 12 catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns. The defense hasn’t been terrible this year, but giving up 354 yards per game to SMU and Lamar isn’t anything to be excited about.

Rice is 2-1 this season after a road loss to Texas in week two, 42-28. Senior quarterback Driphus Jackson is in his second year as the starter and he’s playing very well. Jackson has completed a career-high 63 percent of his passes for 685 yards and five touchdowns. He has also rushed for 80 yards and a score.

Dennis Parks seems to be the quarterback’s only weapon in the passing game right now as he has caught 16 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. The Owls’ defense struggles against the pass, which is not good against an aerial attack such as Baylor’s, so the secondary will have its hands full.
