Replacing The Injured Ben Roethlisberger

Ben Roethlisberger suffered a sprained MCL and bone bruise that will likely keep him out from four to six weeks of action. Big Ben has been one of the best quarterbacks in this season so far and for those of you who have Roethlisberger as your starter you are now faced with the unenviable task of replacing your fantasy starting quarterback.

Now just as we talked about when Tony Romo went out let us start off by talking about Roethlisberger’s backup who just happens to be none other than Michael Vick. Vick is a guy who we all likely know his story, but has been a sought after starter in leagues because of his dual threat talents. Vick has great legs despite that he is aging some and a very strong, but inaccurate arm. He should be able to keep Antonio Brown as a decent start and have the ability to stretch the field with him. I expect Le’Veon Bell to see a majorly increased role and could see Heath Miller getting a bump as well.

If I was a Ben Roethlisberger owner I would almost certainly have Mike Vick as my number one waiver wire add this week, but I don’t think I would have him as a regular starter by any stretch. Now hopefully despite the fact that Big Ben doesn’t miss very many games you have already drafted a capable backup with upside such as the likes of a Marcus Mariota or Philip Rivers, but in case you didn’t let us look at a list of guys I would be targeting to replace Roethlisberger over the next several weeks.

In my ten team league I just checked the waiver wire and the top two quarterbacks that are available are Andy Dalton and Tyrod Taylor. Both of those guys should already be owned in many leagues, but if they are available I would add them over Vick in a heartbeat. Dalton is possibly on the verge of becoming an every week starter as he has been pretty incredible to start the season, while Taylor has the upside of a QB1 as well.

Blake Bortles is coming off of two pretty solid weeks and could also be a solid add for a team needing a quarterback in a deeper league. I like Bortles talent and have always thought he would develop into a pretty solid NFL quarterback. Yesterday he threw for 242 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. In week two he tossed 273 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Sadly even in my ten team league I do not see another QB that I would be happy about adding and using as a starter in any league. A name that I might consider would be Ryan Fitzpatrick in a deeper league. Beyond all of that you will probably need to be hitting up your teammates for a trade who will certainly look to take advantage of you and charge you a premium so be ready to get creative and look for a bargain.

As always we thank you for stopping by and wish you fantasy footballers the best of luck!
