Fantasy Football: Replacing Tony Romo

Replacing Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys took a huge blow to their season in week 2 when Tony Romo suffered a broken collarbone and is likely to miss the next eight weeks. That would put him is possibly returning in week 11 against the Miami Dolphins. This is probably worse news for the Cowboys than it is fantasy owners, but I know there is a select group of you guys out there who draft and trust Tony Romo as a starter every year in fantasy and for those of you we will run down the list of guys who I feel can be a suitable replacement.

The first guy who can typically come to mind in replacing Romo is his backup. His backup is Brandon Weeden and I might pick him up in a deep league, but I would think that there should be some better options available in a standard ten team league. I would probably do everything I could if I was replacing Romo in a two-quarterback league to acquire Weeden having said that.

Our own Robert Townsend has graded out some possible free agent acquisitions as well. You can find a link to that article by clicking here.  We will also hit on some of the guys Robert talked about and what yo should do with Romo in your leagues.

Tyrod Taylor graded out as a B on Robert’s post. He would be a pretty sufficient backup who along with a few streaming options could possibly lead you to go .500 while Romo is on the mend.

Andy Dalton is available in a ten team league that I have and he could be available in some of yours as well. At only a 31.4% ownership clip the Red Rocket is mildly under-owned and could be another guy who could keep you in the hunt in your fantasy league.

Blake Bortles could also be an outlying option who could prove fantasy worthy if he can replicate what he  did in week two against the Miami Dophins. Bortles tossed for 273 yards and two touchdowns.

I would also consider trading him. I know not many people are in the market for a broken Dallas Cowboys QB, but if you package him with another player that you want to sell high on you could potentially return a decent QB2. Say for instance someone out there drafted Marcus Mariota as a QB3 you could potentially strengthen a weak area on his team and throw in Tony Romo for good measure and get a solid QB to lead you through the season.

  • The important thing is to stay open to all ideas and find someone to mend that hole vacated by Tony Romo in your lineup and make sure that if you are working with a QB2 level guy that you have a solid matchup. If you do not, then you will want to see what is available on the waiver wire and if there is a good match-up out there pluck him and insert him in your lineup.

As always we thank you for stopping by and wish you fantasy footballers the best of luck!
