Florida Gators wearing eye-sore orange against Ole Miss
By Dani Bostick
The University of Florida Gators are wearing orange head-to-toe against Ole Miss.
For the second time this year, the undefeated University of Florida Gators are donning their nearly all-orange uniforms. The first time they wore them was against the East Carolina University Pirates, whom they dispatched of, 31-24.
Prior to the ECU game, the Florida Gators had not worn all-orange since 1989 when Emmitt Smith donned the super-orange uniform against Kentucky.
Meanwhile, the Internet is freaking out over the potential for bad all-orange karma.
Others just want the alternate uniform to be just that: One worn occasionally instead of the regular one:
Still others are focused on aesthetics:
Florida Gators Uniform Score Card
Aestetics: 3 Described as “retina-scaring” and “hideous,” the overwhelmingly orange Gators unis simultaneously recall flamingos, Home Depot, traffic cones, and an episode of Orange is the New Black.
Karma: 3 Even if the all-orange uniforms offer a chance of having good karma, Twitter basically destroyed that. Once you attribute bad karma to a uniform, you can’t undo that. The team did win recently against ECU in a too-close-for-comfort game while wearing all-orange. Fans need to be more careful to voice concerns about bad karma. It never helps.
On-Brand-ness: 7 There have been a lot of complaints that the uniforms are too similar to Clemson’s. They are also quite similar to the Miami Hurricanes uniforms (at least Miami has the sense to pair a white helmet with the orange pants and jersey). It is still on-brand, however. Florida is the land of oranges. Orange groves, orange juice, and orange sunsets. An all-orange uniform, while not terribly unique among college teams, is very Florida.
Functionality: 10 Let’s face it. The we’re talking football, not a fashion show. The all-orange uniforms feature all of the same functionality as the other ones. Unlike cars, where red improves speed and overall performance, color does not change the way the uniforms work or feel.
Fan Support: 1 Fans are freaking out over the appearance, karma, and the use of an alternate uniform so frequently. Some are preemptively embarrassed and ashamed about the team wearing these on national television (at 7 p.m. EDT in case you were wondering). A few sane, rational fans have pointed out that the color of the uniforms doesn’t matter, but for the most part, these uniforms are not a fan favorite and are generating a lot of bad juju.
Overall Score: 4
