West Virginia wide receiver Jovon Durante had a free run at the endzone, but jumped an fell on the catch instead
After bringing his West Virginia Mountaineers team within 10 points of the Oklahoma Sooners in a huge Big 12 matchup, wide receiver Jovon Durante had a prime opportunity to bring them even closer with another touchdown catch. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, he chose to go another route.
Durante absolutely put the defensive back covering him through the wash and was wide open with nothing but the endzone ahead of him. Skyler Howard underthrew him slightly so that Durante had to stop. Instead of staying grounded and running into the endzone, though, Durante jumped high and came down on his rear, making him down at the spot:
Great route running by #WVU's Jovon Durante. Underthrown by #Mountaineers QB Skyler Howard. Should've been ... https://t.co/L2iB9TVv07

If he stays grounded, that’s still an entirely catchable pass. It might not hit him in the chest, but it also might mean six points if he just catches it high and turns to run.
It turned out to be a big play for West Virginia as they were unable to get the touchdown after that play and had to settle for a field goal. If they wind up losing this game, people are undoubtedly going to be even more curious about Durante’s decision to jump on that play.
