Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Northwestern Wildcats
The No. 16 Northwestern Wildcats will try to sustain their strong early season run into conference play when they host the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday at Ryan Field.
Northwestern was one of the bigger surprises of the nonconference season, racing out to a 4-0 start with impressive wins over No. 18 Stanford and Duke. A stingy defense allowing just over 300 yards per contest has helped the Wildcats rise up the rankings, with sophomore linebacker Anthony Walker leading the way.
Minnesota enters Big Ten play at 3-1 with three ugly wins and a narrow loss to No. 4 TCU. Quarterback Mitch Leidner and the Golden Gophers offense have some major issues, but a stingy front seven should keep them competitive in conference play.
Points will likely be at a premium on Saturday, as both defenses have looked strong in the early going. The Wildcats figure to rely heavily on running back Justin Jackson to grind out a win, much like they did in their opener against Stanford.
It’s still very early, but the winner of Saturday’s contest will be in good shape in the Big Ten West race. The game can be seen at Noon eastern on the Big Ten Network or streamed live on the BTN2GO app.
