Oklahoma had a point to prove on Saturday against West Virginia and they did just that

The Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia Mountaineers each had a point to prove within the Big 12 landscape as they did battle on Saturday in Norman. When it was all said and done in this one, it was Oklahoma that made that statement, coming away with the 44-24 win.

After the defenses went back and forth for a few minutes here, the Sooners got the scoring started in the first quarter of this one. Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield found Mark Andrew for the 17-yard touchdown to give them the 7-0 lead. As far as the first quarter goes, that would be all the scoring that we would see, as the defenses went right back to work in this one.

Early in the second quarter, though, the Mountaineers would even things up. Just after the period got underway, running back Rushel Shell capped off a seven-play, 86-yard drive with a five-yard scoring run, diving over the pile in front of him. Oklahoma, however, would answer that score and regain the lead a few minutes later. West Virginia brought the pressure, but Mayfield stood tall and found Sterling Shepard for a 28-yard score to grab the 14-7 lead. With nine minutes to go in the second quarter, Oklahoma would add a field goal to push the lead to 17-7.

Right before the half, Oklahoma would add to that lead even more, as Joe Mixon scored the first rushing touchdown of his Sooners career, a 35-yarder right through the middle of the West Virginia defense. The Sooners would take that commanding 24-7 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, West Virginia would try to mount their comeback. With just under 10 minutes left in the quarter, Skyler Howard would hit Jovon Durante for the one-yard score to cut it to 24-14. A few minutes later, a Josh Lambert field goal from 23 yards out would make it 24-17, making the Oklahoma faithful in attendance quite nervous.

After a West Virginia turnover, Oklahoma would add another field goal to make it 27-17. But, the Mountaineers weren’t done just yet in this quarter. With just under a minute to play, Skyler Howard took off down the right sideline to bring West Virginia to within 27-24. You would think that’d be all the scoring that we would see in the third, right?

Wrong.

With 13 seconds to go, Baker Mayfield would hit Durron Neal for the 71-yard deep ball score down the left side after the West Virginia defense — well, they had quite the blunder. That would make things 34-24 in the favor of the Sooners at home.

West Virginia was trying to get back into this one in the fourth, but disaster then struck. Howard was sacked by Eric Striker and the ball was scooped up by Okla Jordan Evans and taken in for 41-24 lead.

Oklahoma would add in one more field goal and seal this one away for good.
