Despite a lot of people calling for his firing, Charlie Strong seems to be safe at Texas for the time being
This past Saturday, things got a lot worse for the Texas Longhorns. Just when some maybe thought things couldn’t get worse for this once proud program, they were blown off the field by the TCU Horned Frogs, 50-7, and more people came to the forefront to call for the firing of head coach Charlie Strong.
Those people that would like to see Strong not running this program anymore, though, might not want to hold their breath for too long.
According to a report from ESPN’s Joe Schad, even with things seemingly falling apart early this season, Strong has the support of the right people that he ultimately needs that support from. More or less, he’s going to be given the proper time to get all of this mess in order.
“Charlie has a lot of breathing room,” according to Schad. “There is nowhere near the pressure to remove him at this time that there was with Steve Patterson or even Mack Brown.
“Charlie has the support of the people he needs to be supported by right now. The last thing they want to do is make a change.”
One thing that people tend to forget is that Strong walked into quite the mess down in Austin. During the waning years of Mack Brown, everything was coming unglued, especially the recruiting. You know, that’s where all of the quarterback jokes come from, in case you had forgotten that.
Essentially, not a lot of what’s going on right now with this legendary program is the fault of Charlie Strong. Now, if two or three years down the road Texas is getting the doors blown off of them by conference competition then, yes, we can talk about Strong being given the boot.
But, for now, it seems the administration realizes that it’s best to give him room to do his work.
