Joe Philbin has been removed as head coach of the Miami Dolphins and the team has replaced him with tight ends coach Dan Campbell on an interim basis.

The fate of Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has been the worst kept secret in sports, with rumors flying that the coach would be let go as early as Monday morning. Apparently, all the team was waiting for was Philbin to land back in the United States to make the move official.

Those rumors turned into a reality with the Dolphins officially parting ways with Philbin, per Kevin Lerner of the Sun Sentinel. In the interim, Miami will name tight ends coach Dan Campbell as the team’s new coach.

Philbin and the Dolphins lost again on Sunday, dropping their season record to 1-3. In three-plus seasons at the helm of the Dolphins, Philbin owns a 24-28 record and has yet to put together a winning season in Miami.

Already under fire coming into the season, Philbin’s team has done him no favors thus far. Despite addind Ndamukong Suh, the Dolphins have the league’s worst rush defense, surrendering 642 yards on the ground in 2015. The pass defense hasn’t done much to help out either, ranking 15th in the NFL with an average of 239 yards allowed per game and only one quarterback sack as a unit.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins’ struggles on the offensive side of the ball have only exasperated the issue, with Miami ranking 25th in total offense and averaging just 314.8 yards per game. A lot of that falls on the rushing game, which places 31st, ahead of only the Detroit Lions with an average of 69.2 yards per contest.

Miami will be on a bye during week five, hoping the off time will help them re-establish themselves under Campbell before meeting up with Tennessee on October 18th. For now, Campbell will be the interim coach, but the Dolphins are expected to pursue a long-term candidate. While they may do so sooner than later, it would be more likely that they wait until the offseason when the coaching pool will be larger.
