Kevin Love posted a tribute to Flip Saunders o nSunday after the former head coach died at the age of 60.
Flip Saunders was never a bombastic superstar in the NBA, but he was always there doing the right hitting at the right time. He led the Timberwolves through their infancy into the Western Conference Finals, helped the Pistons dominate the East for a few years and was starting to build the Wolves back up with a young roster of talent.
His role in that journey ended on Sunday when Saunders died at the age of 60 after battling cancer. His death has left the entire NBA reeling, from players who met him in passing to others he had more of an impact on.
One of those players is ex-Timberwolves star Kevin Love.
Love sent out his condolences to Saunders family and remembered his head coach for the positivity their relationship had.
It wasn’t always a great relationship with the Wolves and Kevin Love, but one of the common threads was Flip Saunders. There was never really any bad blood between those two and it was Saunders who helped get Love to Cleveland where he is in the best position of his career to become a true superstar talent.
Sure, it was brought on by Love demanding out, but Saunders could have shipped him anywhere but elected to draw the process out for the best of both parties. You can tell that there was respect here between Saunders and Love — just like there was everywhere Saunders coached.
