Wednesday afternoon’s Belk Bowl battle between two solid teams from the SEC and ACC did not disappoint.
Two teams that didn’t get much love this season in their respective conferences, Mississippi State and North Carolina State, faced off for the 2015 Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., while college football fans got a nice appetizer to tomorrow’s main entree of College Football Playoff games.
While it seems like New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day games can’t come soon enough, these two squads quenched the third of many college football spectators.
Dak Prescott doesn’t quite get the love he deserves at Mississippi State, leading a normally mediocre program into national relevance. He started the game off strong on Wednesday, passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter to go up 14-0.
North Carolina State’s Jacoby Brissett had the exact opposite start, passing for just 32 yards and two interceptions in quarter No. 1. The Bulldogs took a comfortable 31-14 lead into halftime and needed to just run out the clock and head home with a win in the second half.
Mississippi State ran away with the victory, dominating the second half on its way to a 51-28 win as Prescott broke a school bowl record with four touchdown passes.
Three Stars
Dak Prescott was phenomenal from the start of the game until the very end, passing for 380 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while running for a Bulldog-high 47 yards on 12 carries.
De’Runnya Wilson had five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, leading all receivers during the Belk Bowl.
Brandon Holloway was electric for Mississippi State, catching four passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, including a nifty 55-yard catch and run.

Betting Odds
The Bulldogs of Mississippi State opened as six-point favorites and the over/under was set at 60.5 points. The Bulldogs almost scored 60 by themselves and easily covered the spread.
2016 Openers
Mississippi State doesn’t have the greatest season opener in 2016, hosting Southern Alabama, but it will be a good warmup for the Bulldogs without Dak Prescott.
North Carolina State will begin the 2016 campaign at home against William & Mary and they, too, will have a “scrimmage” in their first game without Jacoby Brissett at quarterback.
