Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has become the sixth-fastest player in NHL history to reach the coveted 500 goal milestone. Everyone who got it in fewer games than Ovechkin played at least two seasons in the 1980’s. Ovechkin has matched those guys while playing in an era that isn’t optimal for goal scorers.
Everyone who has played against Alex Ovechkin realizes how great he is and what he means to the game of hockey. The first video features pre-taped congratulations from two of his former teammates: Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green and long-time mentor Sergei Fedorov. It also features Don Cherry wearing a ridiculous suit because why not?
The next one comes from some of the other players who have scored 500 career goals, including Capitals legend Peter Bondra, Hall of Fame forwards Jeremy Roenick and Pierre Turgeon, and Colorado Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla. They know how hard it is to score that many goals in the NHL.
The next wave of congratulations came from 500 goal scorer Phil Esposito. Ovechkin passed Esposito to become the sixth-fastest player to get to 500 goals.
