The Edmonton Oilers have traded goaltender Anders Nilsson to the St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues were looking to acquire some goaltending depth after the recent injury to Brian Elliott and an injury scare with Jake Allen. They have done that by trading for Edmonton Oilers goaltender Anders Nilsson. In exchange, the Oilers get goalie prospect Niklas Lundstrom and a 2016 fifth round pick.

St. Louis did quite well for themselves. They didn’t need to make a huge splash to get goalie depth. The Blues got a respectable backup in Nilsson who should be able to help them out until Brian Elliott returns from injury. Nilsson’s presence allows the Blues to ensure that Elliott is fully healthy before he comes back. They might have been tempted to rush him back without having a reliable backup goalie. Nilsson is more than capable of fulfilling that role.

Edmonton gets a respectable goalie prospect in Niklas Ludstrom. The Oilers system is barren of goalie prospects so Ludstrom is a nice addition. He has a 2.92 GAA in 13 ECHL games and a 2.75 GAA in four AHL games this season. They also get a fifth round pick as well. A team that is rebuilding like the Oilers needs as many draft picks as they can get.

They got something for someone who didn’t have a future with the team.
