Todd McLellan rips Oilers in press conference (Video)
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan held nothing back as he discussed his team’s performance in a presser following Edmonton’s 5-0 loss to the Flames.
The Edmonton Oilers were expected to improve from last season after hiring head coach Todd McLellan and drafting Connor McDavid with the first-overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. That hasn’t been the case as the Oilers enter Sunday as the worst team in the league with 67 points through 80 games.
Edmonton looked especially awful during a 5-0 loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday. McLellan showed his displeasure and frustration during the post-game presser.
"During the press conference, McLellan called out the Oilers lack of effort. “That’s the exact crap we’re trying to eradicate from this group,” he said, via Pro Hockey Talk. “That’s really disappointing after 200 days together… that’s the exact [crap] that we’re trying to eliminate here. And we see it after 200 days. Disappointing.”"
Todd McLellan also said that the Oilers need to show more work ethic. He’s clearly fed up with his team and it’s likely the front office is as well. This could lead to changes in Edmonton, especially among players who don’t buy in to McLellan’s system. There are only two games left in the season, but this offseason can’t come soon enough for Edmonton.
The Oilers are one of hockey’s storied franchises, having enjoyed a dynastic run with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and a host of other Hall of Famers. Edmonton won five Stanley Cups between 1984-90 but has not tasted sweet victory since.
