NFL Draft 2016: Five worst picks of the first round
Determining the five worst picks from the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft
The feeling that there was going to be high drama in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft was inescapable leading up to Thursday evening as the festivities got underway in Chicago. Considering that there had already been two blockbuster trades with the Los Angeles Rams moving up to the No. 1 pick and the Philadelphia Eagles moving to No. 2 well before the day of the draft, the notion that things would get wild was there.
No one could’ve predicted the way things actually played out in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, largely because of what happened with former Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Less than 15 minutes before the beginning of the first round, someone posted a video of Tunsil hitting a gas mask bong to the draft prospect’s official Twitter account. Given that there were already some character concerns coming into the draft that teams were essentially willing to ignore, the video on social media caused all of the red flags in the world to be raised.
So despite being arguably the best player in this entire 2016 NFL Draft, Tunsil began to fall down in the first round in a major way. While virtually every mock draft had him going in the top-5, the first 10 picks passed on Thursday and the Ole Miss product still hadn’t heard his name called by Roger Goodell.
Eventually the Miami Dolphins finally took the “risk” with Tunsil at No. 13, but the drama wasn’t even done there as the lineman’s Instagram was hacked after he was selected. The hacker posted messages seemingly outing Ole Miss for NCAA violations in regards to paying for Tunsil and his mother’s bills.
The calamity involving Laremy Tunsil really made a lot of teams go a bit crazy in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft while some managed to stay the course. Whether they were made in a panic with Tunsil falling or part of the plan, though, there were some questionable selections made on Thursday night.
These are the five worst draft picks from the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
