Germain Ifedi, Guard — Seahawks, Pick No. 31

The Seattle Seahawks made one of the big moves at the end of the first round on Thursday as they were the ones willing to cut a deal with the Denver Broncos so that the Broncos could move up and take quarterback Paxton Lynch. In doing so, the Seahawks ultimately ended up with the No. 31 overall pick and they used that pick to take offensive guard Germain Ifedi out of Texas A&M. Even at the end of the first round, this was a curious pick for the Seahawks.

Without question, Seattle has a need for depth on their offensive line and that’s something that showed itself throughout the year. However, there’s also no skating around the fact that the Seahawks are looking at the 2016 season with one of the most shallow groups of skill position players in the NFL. Sure, Thomas Rawls looked incredible when he was healthy last year and could replace Marshawn Lynch, but that’s one guy and even he’s a bit of a question mark. Subsequently, when you see them take Ifedi while Derrick Henry and Sterling Shepard are still on the board, it makes you scratch your head a bit.

Only making things worse is the fact that Ifedi is a questionable offensive line prospect right now. He has obvious size, skill, and talent, but his technique and size do make him a bit of a “tweener” on the line that’s going to need some time being coached and developing at the pro level. With all of that going into this selection, it’s hard not to look down on it just a bit.
