Cincinnati Reds Place Raisel Iglesias on DL
By Bill Pivetz
The Cincinnati Reds placed their ace starting pitcher Raisel Iglesias on the 15-day disabled list. On a team with limited pitching options, this is a big problem.
The Cincinnati Reds had a lot of shuffling around of their starting rotation over the last couple of years. The team had four rookie pitchers make at least 10 starts last season. One of those pitchers became the Reds No. 1 starting pitcher this season, and his name is Raisel Iglesias. Unfortunately he was scratched from his Sunday start and placed on the DL.

Raisel Iglesias started the 2016 season off on the right foot. He finished April with a 1-1 record, 3.49 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. His most recent start was a little worrisome. Against the New York Mets, he gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings. He didn’t get his fastball over 90 mph Monday until the fifth inning.
He then felt a pinch in his throwing shoulder on Friday and went for an evaluation on Saturday. After that, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive from Tuesday. The Reds recalled Tim Adleman as Iglesias’ replacement on Sunday. He owns a 3.79 ERA, 7.4 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 410 1/3 career minor league innings.
This isn’t the first time Iglesias has dealt with shoulder problems. He had shoulder fatigue last season and didn’t start his throwing program until later in the spring as a result. At just 26 years old, this is definitely a red flag for future seasons.
Raisel Iglesias is owned in 82.1 percent of ESPN leagues. Luckily, there are a lot of starting pitchers available to pick up as a replacement. I recently wrote about Rich Hill being a viable option. Boston Red Sox’ pitcher Steven Wright is owned in just 22 percent of leagues.
If you play in a league that separates starters and relievers, Alex Colome qualifies as both. He is a good source for saves and low ERA and WHIP. Another deep option is Texas Rangers’ A.J. Griffin. He has three quality starts in his first four games.

Going back to Raisel Iglesias, he shouldn’t be out too long. This sounds like a minor injury that will keep him out for the minimum amount of time. If all goes well, he will be able to return sometime in the middle of next week. Iglesias owners better hope that his velocity returns or you got a bigger problem on your hands.
