Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday. Unfortunately, there was more damage than expected and he is done for the year.

It seems like this same topic was written about last season. But here it goes.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will miss the rest of the 2016 season after playing in just 16 games. This is the second time in as many seasons that he will not make it past May. He ends with two runs, one RBI, a .140/.218/.160 line with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

He missed multiple games without team management telling anyone what was ailing him. The first report was on April 30 when he sat out due to left shoulder stiffness. He was then placed on the 15-day DL on May 2, retroactive to April 28. It was announced that he would undergo surgery on Tuesday and was transferred to the 60-day DL. Then, things got worse.

The surgery revealed more damage and is recovery time would be longer than expected.

The initial reports stated that he would be out four months, but likely still would have been out for the rest of the season.

Devin Mesoraco’s 2015 season ended after undergoing hip surgery. He played in 23 games, scoring two runs, two RBI and a .178/.275/.244 line. He was a 10th round pick last season and a 20th round pick this season, but yet the eighth catcher drafted.

Tucker Barnhart is now listed as the Reds starting catcher. So far this season, he has six runs, one home run and six RBI and a .266 average. He’s only an add in NL-only or the deepest of leagues. If you need a replacement, for some reason, J.T. Realmuto is out there in 40 percent of leagues and a much deeper option is Curt Casali (1.6 percent), whose last seven out of 13 hits have gone for extra bases.

As for Devin Mesoraco, this is it as a fantasy option. He’ll be spending this offseason recovering from yet another injury. He hasn’t been productive in over two seasons. And, most leagues only use one catcher which is part of the reason why he wasn’t owned in many leagues to begin with. I’d look anywhere else when drafting next season.
