The city of Atlanta will host the 2019 Super Bowl in their new stadium.
After a vote from the owners of all 32 franchises, the city of Atlanta has been chosen to host Super Bowl LIII in 2019, according to NFL PR man Brian McCarthy. Atlanta won the voting over New Orleans, South Florida and Tampa Bay.
The Atlanta Falcons have a new stadium currently being constructed, with the $1 billion masterpiece expected to be done prior to the 2017 season. Obviously, their new stadium probably had a lot to with Atlanta getting chosen to host the Super Bowl.
The new stadium (named Mercedes-Benz Stadium) is a revolutionary design that will be incredibly interesting to see when it is finished. The Falcons and the city of Atlanta have sunk a ton of money into this state-of-the-art NFL stadium, and the league is helping repay them with by hosting a Super Bowl.
While they will not make up the $1 billion spent on the stadium with one game, the Super Bowl is obviously a big-time money-maker for the local economy and this is big news for the city.
However, Atlanta will have to wait their turn to host the big game, as Houston, Texas has the Super Bowl next season, while Minneapolis, Minnesota hosts the Super Bowl in their own new stadium in 2018.
The NFL also announced South Florida will host the Super Bowl in 2020, with another new stadium in Los Angeles hosting the marquee event in 2021. The NFL is making it clear to franchises and cities across the league. If you want to host a Super Bowl, shell out the money for a new stadium.
