Alexander Rossi won the 100th Indy 500 and put his name into the record books.

The 2016 Indy 500 marked a very special day for the historic race on Sunday, as it was the 100th installment of the event and every driver on the track was racing their hardest so that they could say that they are the 100th winner of the Indy 500.

While last year’s installment of the race began with a massive wreck, this year’s race got off to a clean start with James Hinchliffe out on the pole. Hinchcliffe would hold onto the lead for a while, then the action would begin to pick up.

Ryan Hunter-Reay would work his way into the lead, while the likes of Helio Castroneves and Townsend Bell would try to work their way around him. In fact, Bell was stealthily making moves all day and he finally worked his way up into the front.

In a rather unusual manner, there was a hectic moment in the pits, as Bell and Hunter-Reay would somehow both wreck into each other at reduced speeds trying to get out of their stalls.

This led to Alex Tagliani taking over the lead as the race headed into the final stretch run of the day. At lap 160, Tony Kanaan would take the lead in a battle with Josef Newgarden off of a restart.

With 30 laps remaining, Kanaan would battle with J.R. Hildebrand for the lead. Newgarden would work his way back into the mix and would take the lead late in the race. While they were battling, Carlos Munoz would gain some impressive speed and would hang on the tail of Newgarden.

Munoz would come for a pit and Alexander Rossi would assume the lead with Helio Castronevez right behind him. The rookie on the economy run would win the race in impressive fashion and pull off the huge upset to win the 2016 Indy 500.
