Answering just how long the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is for the Indy 500

Even the most avid racing fans will admit that there’s no event and no race quite like the Indy 500. When it comes to the pomp and circumstance, the talent, the traditions, and the history of the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you really almost can’t even come close to touching the Indy 500 in the world of motor sports.

For those several hours that the drivers are on the track in the Indy 500, it’s essentially non-stop action. These drivers are traveling at ridiculous speeds and making moves at angles and with margins for error that are just absurdly precise. It’s truly a marvel to watch.

As anyone can surmise simply by looking at the name of the race, the Indy 500, the race is 500 miles long every single time. It’s part of the charm and the tradition of such a great event in racing. However, that doesn’t mean that everyone knows how many laps are run and, thus, how long the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is.

Well, you can start by saying that the Indy 500 consists of 200 laps around the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which means that the track is 2.5 miles long. That’s quite a trip for one lap around—but that again only makes this race that much more special.

With Sunday, May 29 being the 100th running of the Indy 500, you won’t want to miss any of the 200 laps around that track.
