The Boston Red Sox are having a resurgent season this year behind production from a variety of players on the roster. One player that is having an MVP-worthy season is designated hitter David Ortiz, who is the final year of his career.
Ortiz currently is near the top of the league in home runs and leads the American league in RBI’s. With such a strong start to what is his final year, Barry Bonds decided to weight in on the production that Ortiz is having at 40 years old.
In an interview with The Boston Herald’s Evan Drellich, Bonds praised the high IQ that Ortiz has for the game and said that Ortiz has the talent and if a player has the talent they can do what they’re doing at their age.
"“Doesn’t matter, bro,” Bonds said. “You have the talent, you can do it. It’s (that) the expectations of David are higher than most. Nothing to do with, ‘Can he do it?’“Let’s get this story right. You guys (media speculating about Ortiz’ fountain of youth) are trying to do stuff that’s not proper, or truthful. David Ortiz has been a great hitter for a long time. Nothing changes between now and then. He’s just 40, or whatever how old he is."
While Bonds feel that some could have reckless speculation about Ortiz’s success at his age, he feels like everyone should just sit back and enjoy what they’re seeing and he referred to his season as beautiful.
In an effort to improve his image after retiring, Bonds has really been putting himself out in the media lately and he’s been talking up a lot of people. Regardless of how old Ortiz is, what he is doing in his final year is amazing and it has the Red Sox contending on the field.
If he can keep his performance going the rest of the way, his final season might end with an MVP.
