Pirates Place Gerrit Cole on DL, Recall Jameson Taillon
By Bill Pivetz
While it doesn’t look to be major, the Pirates place starting pitcher Gerrit Cole on the 15-day DL with a triceps injury.
In the famous words of DJ Khaled, “Another one.”
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed starting pitcher Gerrit Cole on the 15-day DL with a right triceps muscle strain. While he recovers, the team recalled Jameson Taillon to start Tuesday night. Cole’s DL stint is retroactive to June 11, so his official time missed shouldn’t be too much.
He was pitching well this season, 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. His ERA is close to last year’s, but the rest of his numbers are trending in the wrong direction. We’re hoping that this short break can reset Cole and help him in the second half.

Gerrit Cole left his most recent start after two innings due to tightness in the muscles. Pittsburgh management were hopeful he would only miss one start, but that is no longer the case. He is the No. 47 starting pitcher on the Player Rater over the last 30 days.
Taillon makes his second MLB start against the New York Mets. With how quiet their bats have been, this is a good opportunity for Taillon to show off his skill.
He faced the Mets in his first start, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. In 61 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, Taillon has a 2.04 ERA with a 61-to-6 K/BB ratio.
However, this looks to be another short-term call up as he will likely be sent back down when Cole returns. That could be in two weeks or six weeks, though. We don’t know the full details yet.

Gerrit Cole is owned in almost 98 percent of ESPN leagues, so this injury affected a lot of fantasy owners. He is someone who should remain on your roster. As far as replacements go, Zach Davies, James Paxton and Blake Snell are owned in less than 40 percent of leagues. If you can, grab Michael Fulmer too.
