Even though this may be the final inclusion of Marvel vs Capcom 3 coming at Evo 2016, it was certainly an entertaining tournament.

Capcom continues to have a strong presence at Evo 2016, even if they don’t have copyright/official support for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Despite the fact that you can’t even buy the game anymore, the niche community continues to hold strong over half a decade later in a situation where others would have quickly moved on. The exciting team-based dynamics and large online viewership come Evo is the reason why it’s here on Sunday afternoon.

Christopher “ChrisG” Gonzalez was like a man possessed in the Marvel vs Capcom 3 Top 8 Finals. He truly crawled his way through Losers Bracket to get to the Grand Finals, besting Justin Wong, Juan “Priest” Corona and Armando “Angelic” Mejia along the way. It’s there where he faced Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzalez, the Chilean player who had not lost a match leading up to the final matchup.

ChrisG has been a prominent Marvel vs Capcom 3 player since the beginning but entered Top 8 sharing a “Leffen”-like trend of not being able to win it on the Evo stage. Despite his curse, he managed to anchor a Morrigan-heavy team or two to take the first set 3-1. That set the brackets to reset, with both ChrisG and Kane Blueriver left for one final Best of 5 set.

That momentum kept in ChrisG’s favor, as he was ultimately crowned the Marvel vs Capcom 3 Evo 2016 championship going 3-0 in the second set. This was a well-deserved, overdue victory for ChrisG, as all of those who were vanquished by him in Top 8 Finals were there to immediately huge and congratulate the champ.

Concurrent viewership for Marvel vs Capcom 3 peaked at just over 121,800 on the main Twitch channel, showing that there is still some life for the game yet at Evo 2016. It continues the trend of large viewership carried over from Mortal Kombat XL Finals, which saw its own fair share of viewers despite its early start time.

Here are the Top 8 final results for Marvel vs Capcom 3 play at Evo 2016.

  1. Christopher “ChrisG” Gonzalez
  2. Nicolas “Kane Blueriver” Gonzalez
  3. Armando “Angelic” Mejia

  5. Vineeth “ApologyMan” Meka
