DraftKings Early MLB Picks For July 23
There are only two games in the afternoon session today. We have to choose wisely to separate ourselves from the rest of the pack. Let’s take a look at the past stats to see if we can find a few players that may not be widely owned.

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Best Bet:
Ivan Nova ($6,600): How weak is the afternoon slate? The guy who costs the least is the one that has the best history against his opponent. The Giants are only 5-32(.156) against Nova with only two extras base hits (both doubles), no runs, and eight strikeouts. Want another reason to use Nova? He is 4-2 with a 3.74 ERA at Yankee Stadium this year. His road ERA is 6.25
Honorable Mention:
Jeff Samardzija ($7,200): Samardzija has regressed to his 2015 White Sox form lately. He has only allowed fewer than four runs once in his last five starts dating back to June 22. The Yankees are hitting a modest .258 off of him in 89 at bats, but they have three homers and 12 RBI to go with 21 strikeouts. Those are below average numbers. Add the fact that Samardzija is making his first career start at Yankee Stadium, and this is not the best place to use him. That said, he has more strikeout upside than any other afternoon pitcher.
Dark Horse:
Tyler Glasnow (??): Chad Kuhl was sent to the minors on Thursday, but he is still listed as the starter on DraftKings. They should add Glasnow as soon as it becomes official, though as of now it is just the worst kept secret in baseball. Glasnow gave up four runs but only three hits against the Cardinals in his debut. He lasted 5.1 innings and struck out five. The Phillies are a free swinging bunch, and Aaron Nola has a 2-6 record with a 4.67 ERA at home. Nola has also allowed 27 earned runs (30 total) in his last six starts. Glasnow likely wont be dominant, but I love his chances at a win and a handful of strikeouts. Hopefully his price isn’t more than Samardzija’s.

Brandon Belt ($3,500) is 2-4 with a double against Ivan Nova. Grant Green is 2-3 against Nova, but he is at AAA.
Carlos Beltran ($3,400) is 5-16(.313) with three walks, a double, a homer, and two RBI off of Jeff Samardzija. Jacoby Ellsbury ($3,800) is 2-6 with a homer and four RBI, and he should be well rested after getting a break last night. Starlin Castro ($3,100) is 2-3, but has no counting stats. Didi Gregorius ($3,500) is 3-8 with two walks, a double, and two RBI against the Shark. Chase Headley ($3,400) is 5-13(.385) with four walks and two doubles. Mark Teixeira ($3,000) only has one hit in seven at bats against Samardzija, but that hit is a home run.
John Jaso ($2,800) is the only Pirate that has faced Aaron Nola before. He enjoyed some success, going 2-3 with a double.
