DraftKings Late MLB Picks For July 24

There are only two games in the afternoon session today. We have to choose wisely to separate ourselves from the rest of the pack. Let’s take a look at the past stats to see if we can find a few players that may not be widely owned. Can you afford not to take one or both of the top pitching options?

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Mike Mayers will make his major league debut against the Dodgers tonight. We was pitching very well at AAA, but the Dodgers are marginally better than a AAA team. And his strikeout totals weren’t great at that level. Even in a short slate, there is likely too much risk involved.

Tyrell Jenkins has never faced the Rockies. He has allowed seven runs in three starts, which is not terrible, but it is still too much for me to trust him in Coors. Especially with all of those left handed bats.

Best Bet:

Blake Snell ($8,600): Okay, so Snell doesn’t have any past history against Oakland. This is a small slate of games. We have to buck the trend a bit. What I do know is that Snell has posted a nice 3.11 ERA despite his 2-4 record. Boston is the only team that has put up more than three earned runs on him in eight starts. The A’s offense is not nearly as good as Boston’s. He is worth a shot here.

Honorable Mention:

Scott Kazmir ($8,500): Kazmir has the most extensive history of this light slate, but that only drives us further away. The Cardinals are hitting .294 against him in 68 at bats with five homers, nine RBI, and only 15 strikeouts. How lucky do you feel for this price? Honestly, every pitcher in this slate carries risk. Kazmir is at least the most established one, which has to count for something, right?

Dark Horse:

Jesse Hahn ($5,600): Hahn was tagged for a 6.49 ERA in seven starts earlier this year. His ERA at AAA Nashville was a decent 3.63, but he really didn’t do much there to prove that his earlier stats weren’t  a fluke. So why the faith? The Rays are only hitting .158 against Hahn in 19 at bats, but they do have a homer and four RBI with only three strikeouts. If he gets hit hard, he won’t get enough strikeouts to mitigate the damage.

Matt Holliday ($3,300) is 4-13 lifetime off of Scott Kazmir with two walks and two solo home runs. Kazmir was lucky enough to dodge Johnny Peralta again, whoi s 8-19(.421) with two walks, three doubles, two homers, and five RBI off of him.

Yes, the Rockies are at Coors today. You can bet there will be some stacking going on. Freddie Freeman ($4,800) is 5-8 with two walks, two doubles, and three RBI against Tyler Chatwood. Nick Markakis ($4,900) is 2-4 with a double. A.J. Pierzynski ($3,400) is 3-5 with a double. There isn’t a lot of history here, but there is enough.

Corey Dickerson ($3,800) is 2-4 with a homer and three RBI against Jesse Hahn. The rest of the current Rays squad only has one hit in 15 at bats against Hahn.
