NFL Roundup: Pete Carroll, Ryan Fitzpatrick get new deals, Greg Hardy done?
By Hunter Cooke
Make that two leagues that don’t want to touch Greg Hardy.
Pete Carroll, the charismatic head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, reportedly signed an extension through 2019. Somehow, Carroll is the oldest head coach in the NFL, despite acting like one of the youngest on the sidelines.
It’s hard not to find Carroll side bumping and giving out high fives to his players all over the field on Sundays. This signing comes on the heels of the signing of GM John Schneider. The duo has made some great draft decisions over the years, and will return the NFC West for the immediate future.
A year after getting a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys, Greg Hardy has finally become so toxic that no one in the NFL will touch him and now the CFL won’t touch him either. If Hardy wants to play football, he might have to be okay with being relegated to the Arena Football League or lower. Hardy had his second chance with the Cowboys, and he blew it with subpar play and fighting with teammates.
Michael Vick talked to the Charlotte Observer this week about where he would play and who he could beat in a race. According to Vick, he could definitely smoke Cam Newton in a 40-yard dash. While Newton’s running strength lies in his power and not necessarily his speed, that’s a bold claim for Vick to make. He definitely isn’t the QB he was in the past, and going up against Newton is a tall order.
Bill Belichick didn’t say anything about Deflategate, but said Jimmy Garoppolo will be ready to start for Tom Brady. The Pats easily have the most handsome quarterback duo in the NFL between Brady and Garoppolo. Also, Belichick said Brady would be back as the starter in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. No surprise there.
Oh God, the poor, poor Browns.
The LA Rams waived Nick Foles, making him a free agent for any team that wants to throw a bunch of interceptions. If your team wants a trade, and there are no biters you’re not likely to have a job in the NFL for much longer. The writing was on the wall when the Rams traded up to the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and selected California quarterback Jared Goff. There’s no room for Foles anymore, especially as a starting quarterback.
The Lorax who plays for the Jets is back – Ryan Fitzpatrick resigned with the Jets. It’s only a one-year, $12 million contract but that money is guaranteed. The Harvard grad (did you know he went to Harvard?) is going to have a nice little sum of money built up if he keeps getting solid contracts like this.
For today’s happy news, check out Eagles long snapper Jon Dorenbos’s magic trick. He definitely stuck it to Simon Cowell on “America’s Got Talent.”
