Marlins Add Andrew Cashner: Does His Fantasy Value Increase?
By Mike Marteny
Marlins add Andrew Cashner in seven player deal.
The Miami Marlins are making good on their promise to Giancarlo Stanton. They are making a push for the postseason by acquiring right handed pitchers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres. Here are the full terms of the deal:
The 29 year old Cashner was the longest tenured Padre, having been a member of the team since 2012. He was 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA in 16 starts with the Padres this year. His career numbers are much better, as he has a 3.73 career ERA. The Marlins are hoping that he can get back to his career numbers. He has been better of late, turning in three straight quality starts after a meltdown against the Dodgers on July 8th.
Cashner has a 3.00 career ERA in two starts at Marlins Park. Moving away from spacious Petco Park could hurt his ERA totals, but his wins should increase. Moving to a division where he gets to face the Braves and Phillies can only help. If you had added Cashner due to his recent hot streak, he should still provide you with solid value in favorable starts.
Colin Rea is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 starts. If you were using him, continue doing so, but he wont have value in most leagues. With Wei-Yin Chen back on the disabled list again, the Marlins needed starting pitching. Cashner will take the place of Chen. Rea will likely push Jose Urena back to the bullpen. This shouldn’t make too many waves on the fantasy landscape.
Tayron Guerrero has only one major league appearance, but he likely wont be a factor in the Marlins bullpen. He will have a hard time staying in the majors this year. He is mostly a depth piece going forward.

One that may is jarred Cosart. Cosart is 0-1 with a 5.96 ERA in four major league starts this year. He will take an immediate slot in the San Diego rotation. The 26 year old has had some success in his career, as evident by his 3.69 career ERA. Cosart has never pitched at Petco Park, but something tells me he is going to love it. He is worth using in favorable home matchups, and maybe even more than that. I would take a wait-and-see approach with him though.
Carter Capps has a 3.99 career ERA in 118 major league appearances, but he is still only 25 years old. He will miss the rest of this year due to Tommy John surgery, but he could be in the mix for the closer role if he returns healthy. Capps has 177 strikeouts in 135.1 career innings.
23 year old Luis Castillo is 7-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 18 starts for high-A Jupiter this year. He could have a fantasy impact at some point, but it wont be this year. Castillo does have a career 2.71 ERA in class A ball.
The prize of this deal for the Padres is Josh Naylor. Naylor is hitting .269 with nine homers, 54 RBI, and 10 steals in 342 at bats for class A Greensboro. He was a first round pick in last year’s draft, and could be helping the Padres out by 2018.
