Marlins: Fantasy Impact of the Andrew Cashner Trade
The Miami Marlins have recently traded for starting pitcher, Andrew Cashner. Can he turn his career back around and what fantasy implications may this trade have?
Now, former San Diego Padres pitcher, Andrew Cashner will make a new home for the time being in Miami playing for a contending Marlins club. Cashner has certainly had a lackluster past couple of seasons, including this current one. Perhaps, a change in scenery will be all the right-hander needs to come back to his once promising form. We have seen it happen multiple times before. He will have a fresh start, new outlook, and a new team. Is he worth having on your fantasy team to close out the season?

Now playing for Miami, Cashner will make his first start for the club on Sunday, July 31st. I believe Cashner can hold value for your fantasy team in the upcoming weeks. He has already begun to show signs of heating up. Now, that he is playing for a team that can actually give him run support, he is certainly worth a look on the waiver wire. He is merely owned in just 11 percent of ESPN leagues and he is definitely worth more to you playing in the Marlins lineup as opposed to the Padres.
Thus far on the season, the 29-year-old has thrown for 79.1 innings, where he has yielded 80 hits. He is 4-7 with 67 strikeouts, and a 4.76 ERA coming into Sunday. He has been heating up recently, however, as his ERA was 5.40 just four starts ago. Cashner has even tossed five quality starts in his last 10 appearances. Unfortunately for him, he is just 2-5 in that time. San Diego was simply not a strong enough offensive team to help Cashner hold any fantasy value.
Miami is a much better overall team than that of San Diego and Cashner’s record should improve as he adjusts to the new team. His strikeout rate has gone up substantially in his previous three starts. In 17.2 innings pitched since July 15th, the right-hander has surrendered just five earned runs off of 11 hits, while striking out 23. Averaging over a strikeout per inning is very promising from Andrew Cashner.
While San Diego’s season is seemingly finished as they are 15 games back in the division, Miami is very much alive and should help Cashner surge to close out the season. The Marlins are just one game out of a wild card position in the playoffs. They too, are within striking distance of a divisional title.
Andrew Cashner has already shown signs of improvement as of late, and transitioning to playoff contending team, I believe can only help his cause. Look for him to finish off the season strong and perhaps rejuvenate his career. He can aid the Marlins and your fantasy team to a playoff appearance down the stretch. Look for him on your waiver wire.
