DraftKings Late MLB Picks For July 31

There are only four games in the late afternoon session. Half of the pitchers are more than $7,500. Which ones should you pay for?

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Past statistics is only one piece of building a winning lineup.

Paul Clemens has never faced the Reds, but will all of the left-handed power in that lineup, why use a righty with a 4.82 ERA?

Best Bets:

Felix Hernandez ($9,100): Yes, Felix hasn’t been himself this year, but his career stats against the Cubs aren’t just good. They are great. The Cubbies are only hitting .159 against him in 82 at bats with five RBI (four by Ben Zobrist, who is hitting .135 against him in 37 at bats) and 24 strikeouts. That and he is facing Brian Matusz, who is making his first start of the year. Felix should easily be the best pitcher of the late slate, he just may not be as dominant as usual.

Honorable Mention:

Homer Bailey ($8,700): Okay, so I don’t have many stats to back this up. Only three current Padres have faced Bailey, and one (Jon Jay) is on the DL. That means Alexi Amarista and Brett Wallace are a combined 5-21 with a RBI and four strikeouts against Bailey. The fact remains that the Padres offense is terrible outside of Wil Myers, and Paul Clemens has struggled. Bailey couldn’t ask for a better place to make his 2016 debut.

Gio Gonzalez ($8,100): It’s a short slate, so the Giants hitting .250 in 96 at bats with two homers, 12 RBI, and only ten strikeouts is still in play because of the struggles of most of the rest of the starters against today’s opponents. That said, Gonzalez has a 3.00 ERA in July after posting a 4.81 mark over the first three months of the season.

There is a Brian Matusz sighting! That may not be a good thing for Cubs fans. Robinson Cano ($4,600) is 12-35(.343) with three walks, two doubles, two homers, and five RBI against Matusz. Nelson Cruz ($4,100) is 7-12 with a walk, three doubles, two homers, and five RBI as well. Kyle Seager ($4,200) is 4-11 with a double, a homer and three driven in against Matusz.

Danny Espinosa ($2,900) is 3-12 with a walk and two solo homers against Matt Cain. Daniel Murphy ($5,400) is only 4-19(.211), but he has two walks, a double, a homer, and four driven in. Jayson Werth ($3,500) is 5-8 with a walk and a solo homer against Cain. Ryan Zimmerman ($3,600) is only 8-34(.235), but he has two walks, three doubles, a homer, and five RBI.

Adrian Gonzalez ($3,500) is 5-20 with three walks, a homer, and three RBI against Patrick Corbin. Howie Kendrick ($4,300) is 5-12 with three RBI, and comes in riding a hot streak. Yasiel Puig ($3,500) is 4-12 with a double, a homer and three driven in against Corbin. Justin Turner ($4,700) is 7-17(.412) with three walks, a homer, and four RBI off Corbin. Scott Van Slyke ($3,400) is 5-18(.278) with a double, a homer, and four RBI.

Brandon Crawford ($3,200) is 3-11 with a homer and three RBI against Gio Gonzalez.

Rickie Weeks ($3,800) is 5-16(.313) with three walks, three doubles, a homer, and four RBI against Bud Norris. He is worth a look if he starts. Welington Castillo ($3,100) is 5-12 with a walk, a double, and a RBI.
