Yankees: Fantasy Impact of Trading for Tyler Clippard

In wake of trading closer Andrew Miller, the New York Yankees needed to make a corresponding move. They did so in acquiring Tyler Clippard.

The Yankees have apparently not thrown in the towel just yet this season. They are still very much alive and have now found a “replacement” for Andrew Miller. The term replacement is used loosely as no one can fully replace Miller’s presence in that bullpen. However, the Yankees do not plan on giving up on the season just yet. Clippard can help the bullpen no matter what role he may be put in.

With Miller now gone, does this mean it will be Dellin Betances  assuming the duties in the closer’s role, or will it be Clippard? It has not yet been disclosed, but I would assume the Yankees will promote Betances, who has been in the role before in previous seasons for New York. Clippard should assume the set up role or perhaps the 7th inning man.

With Betances and Clippard manning the back-end of the bullpen, it ups both of their respective fantasy values. Clippard is merely owned in 10.7 percent of ESPN leagues. I would assume this will increase as the Yankees disclose what his role will be. Clippard has recorded just one save this season while blowing two. He has also recorded 13 holds.

Clippard will be returning to New York Yankees organization, where his MLB career began back 2007. On the season, Clippard has thrown for 37.2 innings where he has given up a staggering 18 earned runs. He too has struck out 46 in that span, which is encouraging. He is 2-3 with a 4.30 ERA.

Jake Barrett seems to be the likely candidate to assume the closer’s role in Arizona for the time being. His value too, can go up. He is readily available for most to grab. He has three saves and three holds to his name as well this season.

Clippard can certainly make an impact this season with New York. The Yankees should not be too worried. Granted, Betances and Clippard is not Chapman, Miller, Betances, but they can still make some noise and save games for the club.

If you are in need of saves in a deeper league, Barrett is someone worth picking up, too.
