The Los Angeles Dodgers have a very complicated relationship with outfielder Yasiel Puig. Puig has been the subject of trade rumors for the past two seasons and was reportedly shopped aggressively by the Dodgers today. Their relationship, according to Ken Rosenthal, might be coming to an end as the Dodgers left for Denver to play to Colorado Rockies without the troubled superstar.
"Puig, 25, stormed off after arriving at Dodger Stadium and being informed that he would either be traded or sent to the minors, according to major-league sources."
His role with the team was immediately put into question with the acquisition of Josh Reddick from the Oakland Athletics. Though Puig is an extremely talented player, he has not been able to replicate his success from 2013, when he took the world by storm and finished second place in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. His numbers have declined, but he still has a 93 OPS+ with the Dodgers this season.
Considering his talent, the Dodgers won’t have much trouble moving him before August 31, if that is their choice. He is under team control until 2018 (he is eligible for arbitration in 2019) and won’t be a free agent until after the 2019 season. This is an outcome that nobody could have possibly expected in 2013, but Puig and the Dodgers might have a very messy falling out.
