The Boston Red Sox appear to be the favorites in the race for Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale, if the White Sox decide to trade him at the MLB trade deadline.

The Chicago White Sox are exploring trading ace Chris Sale. He will demand a huge return if he is traded. Because of that, the only three realistic destinations for the pitcher are the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox and White Sox have been discussing the possibility of a trade involving Sale.

Of course, the White Sox will be in no hurry to trade Sale. They still have him under team control until 2019 at a dirt cheap price considering his production. Therefore, unless the Red Sox (or another team) can blow away the White Sox with an offer, Sale is likely going to stay in Chicago for now.

Boston is an excellent destination for Sale. They have a great need for pitching (21st in starting rotation ERA) and they have the prospects to pull it off. In order to get Sale, the Red Sox would likely have to put together a package that equals or bests what the Arizona Diamondbacks traded to the Atlanta Braves for Shelby Miller.

Any deal for Sale is going to have to include Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers. Chicago is also likely going to see if they can persuade Boston to include top prospect Yoan Moncada in the deal.
