Orioles address glaring need by adding Wade Miley from Seattle.

The Orioles are in position for a playoff berth, but they had a glaring need in the rotation because of the struggles of Yovani Gallardo and Ubaldo JImenez. They hope to rectify that by trading for Wade Miley a day after a dominating start at Wrigley Field. The trade looks like this:

Miley is 7-8 with a 4.98 ERA, but he has likely been picked up in some leagues due to his three straight quality starts. Can he keep the streak going in Baltimore?

Miley posted an uninspiring 4.46 ERA with the Red Sox last year, his first season in the American League. In three starts at Camden Yards, Miley has a 8.03 ERA. This is not looking good, but it is still looking better than the numbers of Ubaldo Jimenez.

The Orioles weren’t willing to part with Dylan Bundy or Hunter Harvey, and with good reason. So they opted for a middle tier option like Miley. He should at least do better than the 7.06 ERA and 1.95 WHIP posted by Ubaldo Jimenez.

In return the Mariners pick up 27 year old Cuban import Ariel Miranda. Miranda was 4-7 with a 3.93 ERA at AAA Norfolk this year. He gave up three runs in two innings of relief in his major league debut on July 3rd against the team that just traded for him.

Miranda will likely fill the void left by Miley, and may be worth a look in deeper leagues. He has decent strikeout totals, and calling Safeco Field his home should only help his ERA.

Miranda pitched seven professional seasons in his native Cuba, going 22-25 with a 3.78 ERA in 64 starts. He struck out 158 in 170.2 innings pitched. Holding his own in Cuba points to him being able to hold his own here in the U.S. as well.
