San Francisco Giants address bullpen issues by trading for Will Smith.
The San Francisco Giants traded for Will Smith to help out their bullpen. Smith has a 3.68 ERA in 22 innings this year with 12 holds and 22 strikeouts. Smith only has one career save, but there are rumors that he will take over as the closer for the Giants. Once you see what they paid for him, I don’t doubt it. Here is the deal:
Incumbent closer Santiago Casilla is 2-3 with a 3.18 ERA and 24 saves in 29 tries. Sergio Romo and Hunter Strickland both have ERA’s below three at the back of the bullpen. Where Smith fits in isn’t immediately clear, but Casilla has a shorter leash at the very least. If nothing else, Smith should at least see save chances when there is more than one lefty due up in the ninth. Smith is worth adding if you are desperate for saves. If you are a Casilla owner, I would be nervous. I would try to find a trade partner right now so you can still get closer value out of him.
Andrew Susac is hitting .273 with eight homers and 36 RBI at AAA this year, and will report to Colorado Springs to start his tenure with the Brewers. Martin Maldonado is worth a look if you need some power. He has four homers in 84 at bats, which is a solid ratio for a catcher.

Rookie Manny Pina could also see some playing time so the Brewers can see what they have with him. Pina was hitting .329 at AAA Colorado Springs, and is worth a look in deeper leagues if he gets enough playing time.
Phil Bickford just turned 21 less than a month ago. He was 5-6 with a 2.71 ERA in 17 class A starts this year. He racked up 105 strikeouts in 93 innings. He will likely report to A ball for the Brewers as well, but he was one of the better pitching prospects in the Giants system. He wont have an immediate fantasy impact, but those of you in dynasty leagues may want to keep an eye on him.
