Rockies: Trevor Story Out for Rest of Season

The Rockies will be without their all-star shortstop Trevor Story for the rest of the season. Fantasy owners need to look elsewhere for middle infield power.

The Colorado Rockies were surprisingly quiet during the trade deadline. Many expected the team to shop their top two outfielders, but nothing came to fruition. While the team is nine games back in the National League West and 4.5 games back in the Wild Card, the front office was quiet.

Unfortunately, even without a move being made, they lost at the deadline. Shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the 15-day DL with a left thumb injury, and will likely miss the rest of the season. There are plenty of names available to pick up as a replacement.

Story became an overnight phenomenon in the first month of the season. While Jose Reyes was dealing with his off-the-field situation, Story, and fantasy owners, benefitted greatly. He hit six home runs in his first four games of the season. He finished April with 10 home runs, 20 RBI and a .261 average.

As of this writing, he has a .272/.341/.567 line with 27 homers, 72 RBI and a 130:35 K:BB ratio. The amount of strikeouts may look Chris Carter-like, but the power numbers outweigh that, unless you play in a league that rewards negative points for strikeouts.

He is missing at least 15 days with a torn UCL in his left thumb. While many say that the injury that imposing to a batter’s performance, the recovery time is what will affect fantasy owners. Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons missed about two months recovering from surgery for the same injury.

If you own Story, the only thing you can do now is drop him. If you’re in a keeper or dynasty league, he’s still worth rostering. He should be fine come next Spring Training. In the meantime, the Rockies called up Rafael Ynoa, but he isn’t anyone worth talking about. Here are three middle infielders you could add.

Utility man Jedd Gyorko is someone I’ve been raving about for weeks. Over the last 15 days, he has seven homers, 11 RBI and a .370 on-base percentage. He’s owned in just 35.1 percent of ESPN leagues. Javier Baez is another middle infielder worth owning. Digging deeper, Wilmer Flores will continue to see everyday at bats with Reyes on the DL as well.

Story has put together an amazing 2016 campaign, but it’s over now. Keeper and dynasty owners shouldn’t rush out to make any moves, unless you think you can still trade him. For a team that didn’t add any pieces before the deadline, this injury is just as big of a blow to the Rockies as it is to fantasy owners.
