Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies has had an incredible rookie season, but it may have come to an end.

The Colorado Rockies have made a nice run in the National League playoff chase the past few weeks, going 12-5 since the All-Star Break. A main cog in their wheel has been rookie shortstop Trevor Story, who currently leads the National League in home runs with 27. A front-runner for NL Rookie of the Year honors, Story likely will see his season come to an end before playing a game in August.

The injury is a devastating blow to the Colorado Rockies, who will open up a crucial three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The Rockies sit only 4.5 games behind the Dodgers for the NL Wild Card, giving great importance to these three games at Coors Field.

Story was planted into the starting shortstop position during spring training, when incumbent starter Jose Reyes was suspended for violating the league’s domestic violence policy. Story never looked back, blasting 10 home runs in April to be named the National League Rookie of the Month.

The Rockies will now turn to Cristhian Adames to man shortstop for the majority of the time, with Daniel Descalso also getting some starts. While Adames is a solid defensive player, he is batting under .200 in limited action this season, and definitely does not have the pop that Story has. Adames and Story battled it out during spring training for the starting spot, but Story hit .340 in the spring to take the position.

The Rockies will have star rookie pitcher Jon Gray on the mound Tuesday as they open up their series against the Dodgers, and the veteran Descalso will be at shortstop in the opener. Colorado seems to be set at shortstop for the foreseeable future, just not for the remainder of this season.
