DraftKings Early MLB Picks For August 10

There are only three early games today, which really limits the player pool. There are no aces going, so who are the best bets? Let’s check out the past stats to try and find an edge!

More from DFS

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

Best Bet:

Gio Gonzalez ($8,100): Gio checks in with the highest price tag of the afternoon, but you know me better than that. That alone isn’t enough for me to recommend him. The Indians are only hitting .216 against Gonzalez in 88 at bats with a homer and an impressive 27 strikeouts. The nine runs he has given up to the current Indians is about average, but his strikeout totals against this team point to him being worth the money this afternoon.

Honorable Mention:

Scott Kazmir ($7,600): Only six Phillies have faced Kazmir before. They are a combined 6-23(.261), but only have two RBI and nine strikeouts. Kazmir has nice strikeout potential, and Hellickson has not fared well against the Dodgers. He is a solid option this afternoon.

Jeff Samardzija ($5,600): Shark has given up 18 runs in his last four starts, so he is not pitching well right now. However, today’s tilt against the Marlins will give him a great chance to get back on track. The Fish are only hitting .204 against him in 103 at bats with two homers, nine runs, and an impressive 31 strikeouts. His past numbers put him as consideration for the top option of the day, but his recent bad run should leave all of us a little cautious.

Dark Horse:

David Phelps ($5,500): The Giants are just 8-35(.229) against Phelps in his career with only one extra base hit (a Ruben Tejada double, and Tejada is in the minors now) and one RBI (by Brandon Crawford). Phelps only has three strikeouts which gives him little margin for error, but he has a nice matchup against a struggling Samardzija. In a small slate, Phelps is a nice against the grain pick.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Not a stacker? You may not be alone. Matt McGarvey takes his stance against it. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

The Dodgers have hit Jeremy Hellickson hard, but not exactly well. The .241 average is quite pedestrian, but the 13 RBI in 79 at bats is not. Adrian Gonzalez ($4,100) is only 4-24(.167) against Hellickson, but he has four walks, a double, a triple, two homers, and eight RBI off of him. Yasmani Grandal ($4,500) is 3-4 with a double and a solo homer. Justin Turner ($4,700) is 1-2 with a walk and a solo homer. Josh Reddick ($3,600) is only 3-15, but he has a walk and a solo homer as well.

Josh Tomlin has never faced the Nationals, but three of the four players on the current Nats team that have faced him before have driven in a run. Ben Revere ($2,800) is 5-13(.385) with a RBI, but all of the hits are singles. Chris Heisey ($2,700) is 4-8 with a walk and a RBI. Of the ten hits Tomlin has given up to these players, all of them are singles, which diminishes the value a bit.

Mike Napoli ($4,800) is 4-14(.286) with five walks, a double, a triple, a homer, and five RBI against Gio Gonzalez. You know Napoli is cruising if he has a triple! Jason Kipnis ($4,000) is 2-6 against Gonzalez. Both hits are doubles, but he has no counting stats.

Adeiny Hechavarria ($3,000) is 6-12 with a homer and four RBI against Jeff Samardzija. Christian Yelich ($5,100) is 4-9 with two doubles and a solo homer against Samardzija.

Freddy Galvis ($2,500) is 1-3 with a triple and a RBI off of Scott Kazmir. Cody Asche ($2,700) is 2-3, but both hits are singles and he has no counting stats.
