The Miami Marlins are having internal discussions about Alex Rodriguez and could explore adding him once the New York Yankees release him.

The controversial career of Alex Rodriguez could be coming to an end on Friday when the New York Yankees plan to release him. However, Rodriguez did not rule out playing for another team once the Yankees release him. According to Jon Heyman, the Marlins have had internal discussions about Rodriguez.

While Heyman notes that the Marlins don’t appear ready to sign him this moment, the Marlins would make a lot of sense for Rodriguez. He is from the Miami area and he has an offseason home in Coral Gables, which is quite close to Miami.

There is another reason that Rodriguez could find himself in the Marlins organization – in a front office or coaching role. While Rodriguez will be a guest instructor for the Yankees during spring training in 2017, he has no other obligations to the Yankees once they release him. As controversial of a figure as A-Rod is, the Marlins already employ Barry Bonds, the only other recent player who might be considered more controversial than Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has received compliments for his handling of young players, being very generous in his time when it comes to mentoring them. Particularly, he has taken a special interest in Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius and is very good friends with Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. Rodriguez is the type of guy who could thrive in a coaching role. He could also thrive in a front office role, as Rodriguez is also an excellent evaluator of talent.

Maybe Rodriguez just wants to lay low and relax for a while after an extremely stressful career, which would be understandable. But he could find himself back in baseball quickly and the Marlins, if they are interested in him, would give him an excellent opportunity to do so.
