When Alex Rodriguez said goodbye to his playing days on Sunday, he spoke a lot about mentoring young players. His steroid use ruined any chance he may have to make it to the Hall of Fame, and he is lucky that the Yankees are even giving him a chance to stay in baseball. That chance is to help develop the next generation of Yankees, in a special adviser position that will run until December of 2017.

There is no doubt that Rodriguez has an incredible baseball mind, and after over 20 years in the Major Leagues, knows a thing or two about the game. Despite his steroid use, he has a genuine love for baseball, and respects the history of the game. The knowledge that he could bring to the table is unparalleled, as he has played at the major league level for more than half of his life.

Barring a miracle, it appears that A-Rod will never pull on the jersey as a player again. However, he may have a future as a big league manager, being the one calling the shots, and making key decisions. The wounds of his retirement may be too fresh, but there is no reason to not think about what the future may hold for him.

Being a baseball lifer has it’s perks, and despite what the fans may think of him, big league players respect him. Being an adviser will help him continue to mentor young players, but he may be looking at a bigger job down the line.

Here is a look at five teams he could manage one day.
